about

The island of Barbados is made of dead coral; carbonized creatures of the deep that lived and died during the last ice age. The earth pushed them up into the sunshine above the Caribbean Sea. We had the privilege of visiting.

The enslavers planted royal palms as sentinel trees above their plantations. They still mark the horizon. On the coast, eroded palm roots grip the sand while their trunks lean out over the water and the waves slowly wash them away.

We visited an old plantation. The guide told us that the Taíno people used to make tessellated mosaics of bright shells that they found on the beach to sell to the colonizers as "sailors' valentines" for their loved ones back in Europe. She said the beaches have almost no shells now. The rare ones you find are bleached white. She told us this happened because the reefs are dying.

I carried Juno along the West Coast near Fitt's Village every day for a week. We watched the cruise lines' floating cities come in and out. We picked up bleached coral fragments and raced the tide through shallows where the rocks looked like the frozen brains of ancient monsters.

We watched the violence of the waves. I couldn't help asking myself: "How much longer?" How much longer before the royal palms and the coast road and the coconut husks and the fire and brimstone churches are all swept away? What will they be like when the Earth pushes them back up again?
